He has been teaching environmental technology courses at the Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning since 1991, and had taught previously at Arizona State University. He received a citation for service for chairing the 1994 ACSA Technology Conference and an applied research citation from the 32nd Progressive Architecture awards for Sky Simulation Facility at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. During the last two decades he has produced a series of works of superior quality in the areas of daylighting, airflow modeling and sustainable design. Professor Kim is the college representative to the University Senate through 8/31/04.

His current research project, funded through the Lighting Research Center, the Quantification of the Value of Windows and Views to Indoor Occupants, will document peoples' preferences to views as reflected in their seat selection and work performance and measured by the length of stay in their workplaces, as well as public spaces such as cafeterias and libraries. Professor Kim's research will look at fifteen buildings in three major US cities. Correlations between outdoor views, productivity, satisfaction and real estate rental values will be analyzed.
